Let’s be honest, if you’re at home enjoying a nice bottle of wine on the sofa, who cares how you pour it? We certainly don’t. However, if you’re hosting a dinner party or a more formal event, you’re probably looking to impress with your expert pouring technique. Pouring a glass of wine ‘properly’ takes a bit of practice, but just follow these simple steps and you’ll be serving wine like a true bartender in no time.
Initial preparation stage
To pour the perfect glass of wine, start by preparing yourself. Choose the right glassware to start with, and you can learn all about it right here.
Once you’ve picked the perfect bottle of wine, get yourself a cloth or napkin that you have on hand to catch any drops.
This is important because one of the art of pouring properly is not letting the wine drip. When you’re ready, use the opener and open the bottle.
How to hold a wine bottle
Once the wine has opened, lift the bottle from the bottom half. Some people may choose to wrap their hands around the bottle, while others may want to put their thumbs in the recess (large recess in the bottom of the bottle) and hold the bottle this way.
Either way, just make sure your hand isn’t more than halfway up the bottle – keeping the bottle around your neck is a no-brainer. It is important to be aware of the location of the label. It’s best to have this facing out so your guests can see what wine is being poured.
Pour wine into a glass
Now that you’re holding the bottle properly, it’s time to pour the wine. Make sure you are standing to the right of your guests as this is the traditional side where wine should be served. Put the glass on the table, tilt the bottle and begin to gradually pour the wine into the glass aimed at the center.
This can be difficult, but as long as the wine doesn’t splatter as you pour it, you’ll be fine. Try to fill the glass with about 150-180ml of alcohol because this is the right level.
Of course, the size of the wine glass can affect this, for example if you only have small glasses a small amount is more appropriate.
Avoid letting the wine drip after pouring
When you’re ready to pour, rotate the bottle a quarter turn away from you while tilting the bottle upwards quickly but gently. This will prevent the alcohol from dripping – there’s a bit of a knack for this skill that takes some practice to perfect.
When you move the bottle away, have a napkin ready in case they get unwanted drips from the mouth of the bottle.
Some other notes when serving wine
If you’re serving a chilled bottle of wine, make sure to dry the bottle first to prevent condensation from dripping onto the table.
If you’re serving a sparkling wine, pour slowly to avoid bubbling on the rim of the glass.
Pouring like a true pro takes practice, so try with multiple bottles to get the hang of it!
